How rubbish removal is priced

Quotes for the same job can differ. This guide explains what carriers take into account, so you can compare like with like.

What carriers look at

Most carriers price a job from a handful of things. None of them is a secret, but each one changes the total.

  • How much there is. Volume decides how many loads, how much time and how much loading help is needed. Carriers often think in van loads or grab lorry loads.
  • What it is. Heavy, dense waste such as soil, rubble and concrete is costed differently from light bulky waste such as furniture. Some items, like fridges, mattresses or TVs, need specialist handling at disposal.
  • Access. Stairs, long carries, tight parking or a locked gate add time. Say upfront if the waste is upstairs, in a loft or behind the property.
  • Where it has to go. Tipping and disposal costs vary by site and by material, and so does the distance to the nearest suitable one.
  • When you need it. Same-day or weekend slots can cost more than a flexible date.

How to get quotes you can compare

Photograph all of the waste and the access route. Write down anything that will not be obvious from a photo, such as items upstairs or anything that might be hazardous. Give your postcode. Then ask each carrier the same few questions:

  • Is the price a fixed figure or an estimate, and what could change it on the day?
  • Is the labour, disposal and VAT (if charged) included?
  • What is your waste carrier registration number?
  • Will you give me a receipt or waste transfer note?

Warning signs

A very low price with no paperwork can mean the waste is not going to a proper site. If waste you handed over is fly-tipped and traced back to you, you can be held responsible. Never pay for a clearance without checking the carrier first: see how to check a waste carrier.

Which service fits

Bulky items and general clear-outs suit rubbish removal. Whole properties suit house clearance. Heavy soil and rubble often suit grab hire. If you are unsure, read grab hire vs skip vs man and van.

Common questions

Why do rubbish removal quotes vary so much?

Carriers differ in how much labour they allow for, where they take the waste, whether they include disposal costs and how busy they are. Comparing quotes for exactly the same photos and details makes the difference clearer.

Can I get a fixed price?

Many carriers will quote a fixed price from clear photos and details, but they may change it on the day if the waste is not as described. Ask what could change the price.

Does heavy waste cost more to remove?

Heavy, dense waste such as soil and rubble is usually handled and disposed of differently from light bulky items, and it is often better suited to a grab lorry. Tell carriers what it is.
