Who has to clear fly-tipping?

When rubbish is dumped on public land, such as a road or pavement, the council usually clears it, so report it to them. When it is dumped on private land, including driveways, gardens, car parks and business premises, the landowner is normally responsible for getting it cleared.

Report it first

Report fly-tipping to your council even if you are clearing it yourself. Take photos before anything is moved and note anything that might identify who dumped it, such as addresses on letters or a vehicle registration.

Safe, legal clearance

Dumped waste can hide sharp objects, chemicals or asbestos. A licensed carrier removes it safely and takes it to a permitted site. Ask for a waste transfer note, which is your proof it was dealt with properly.

Stopping it happening again

Lighting, gates, signs and clearing waste quickly all make a site less attractive to fly-tippers. Waste left lying around tends to attract more.

Good to know

Fly-tipping clearance: common questions

Will the council clear fly-tipping on my land?

Usually not for free. On private land the landowner is normally responsible, but always report it so the council can investigate.

Can you clear it the same day?

Many carriers can come quickly. Send a photo and say how urgent it is.

What if there might be asbestos?

Do not touch it. Mention it when you send your request so a carrier licensed to handle it can quote.
