Grab hire vs skip hire vs man and van

Three common ways to get rid of waste, each good at something different. Here is how to choose.

Man and van rubbish removal

A crew comes to you, loads the waste and takes it away. It suits furniture, bulky items, garden clear-ups and house clear-outs, especially where there is no space for a skip or you do not want to do the lifting. You only pay for what is taken, and it is usually the quickest option.

Skip hire

A skip is left on site, you fill it over days or weeks, and it is collected when full. It suits larger projects such as renovations or garden makeovers where you will generate waste over time. If the skip has to stand on the road you normally need permission from the council, and you must not put prohibited items in it.

Grab hire

A grab lorry uses a crane arm to load loose, heavy material such as soil, rubble and hardcore directly from a heap, then takes it away. It suits groundworks, driveways, patios and demolition, where there is a lot of heavy material. See grab hire.

Quick way to choose

  • Bulky items or a clear-out, no space for a skip: man and van.
  • Ongoing building or garden project over several days: a skip.
  • Lots of heavy soil or rubble in one go: a grab lorry.

Common questions

Is a grab lorry cheaper than a skip?

It depends on the job. For a large amount of heavy material in one go a grab lorry can be better value, while a skip can suit waste produced over several days. Compare quotes for your actual job.

Do I need a permit for a skip?

If a skip stands on a public road you generally need permission from the council. On your own private land you usually do not. Ask the skip firm or your council.

Can man and van take rubble?

Small amounts, sometimes. Large amounts of heavy rubble and soil usually suit a grab lorry or skip. Tell the carrier what it is when you ask for a quote.
