How to check a waste carrier is registered

Anyone who takes your waste away as a business should be a registered waste carrier. Checking takes a couple of minutes and protects you.

Why it matters

If waste you hand over is dumped, the council or regulator can trace it back to you. Handing it to someone you did not check can leave you responsible. A registered carrier has told the regulator they carry waste, and shows up on a public register.

Check in three steps

  1. Ask for their registration number and the business name it is registered under. A genuine carrier gives this without hesitation.
  2. Look it up on the official register for where you live (below) and check the name and details match.
  3. Ask for a receipt or waste transfer note after the job, and keep it.

Where to check

In England carriers register in an upper or lower tier. The register shows which, so ask a carrier why their registration covers your job.

Other red flags

  • No registration number, or one that does not match the name on the van.
  • A price that is far below every other quote, or cash only with no receipt.
  • Nobody can tell you where the waste will go.

Good to know

Common questions

Do I need to check a carrier if I only have a few bags?

Yes. The size of the job does not change your responsibility for where the waste ends up.

What if a carrier says they do not need to be registered?

Businesses that take other people’s waste for a living generally do need to be. Check the official register for your nation or choose another carrier.

Who checks the carriers on WasteRemoval.xyz?

We pass your request to local registered carriers, but you should always check the registration yourself before handing over any waste.
