What is grab hire?
A grab lorry is a tipper with a hydraulic arm on the back. The driver lifts loose, heavy material straight off the ground or out of a pile and into the body of the lorry, so nobody has to shovel it into a skip. One grab load is roughly the same as two builder’s skips, which is why grab hire is the usual choice for groundworks, garden landscaping and demolition.
What can go in a grab lorry?
Grab lorries are built for heavy, inert waste: topsoil, subsoil, clay, muck, rubble, bricks, concrete, hardcore and mixed building waste. Mention anything unusual when you send your photo. Some materials, such as asbestos, plasterboard and liquids, have to be handled separately and cannot go in with a normal grab load.
Access and reach
Most grab arms reach around six metres from where the lorry is parked, over walls and fences. The lorry needs firm ground and enough width to get close, so a photo of the pile and the access route helps the carrier tell you straight away whether a grab will work.
Muck away and aggregate jobs
Grab hire firms often run muck away for builders and landscapers, and many can deliver aggregates such as sand, gravel and type 1 on the same visit. If you need a delivery as well as a collection, say so in your message.
